Omryan Amilil, treasurer of Brgy. Tukanalipao, Mamasapano, said proper coordination is an important lesson to be learned from the Mamasapano incident, especially with the peace agreements now between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). He added that they have faced discrimination after the Mamasapano incident on January 25, 2015. “Kapag nakita ‘yung ID namin na Tukanalipao, may nagugulat, parang may kakaiba sa kanilang pakiramdam kapag nakikita nila kami,” he said. While development projects were introduced in their locality after the incident, it was still disheartening for them that such violence had to happen before they can be noticed by the government.

To Senate: Marawi Compensation Now!

19 January 2022

With less than 15 days of session in the Congress, the Marawi Reconstruction Conflict Watch (MRCW) calls the Senate to fulfill their promise and commitment to pass the Marawi Compensation Bill. For the Maranaos displaced by the war, it seems all promises of recovery have come to naught. After more than four years, they have lost all hope in seeing the rehabilitation of their lives and properties, their culture and way of life, and the reconstruction of their beloved city. As the election nears, they fear being forgotten. Tune in as MRCW discusses their longstanding advocacy for the Marawi compensation bill and their urgent push for the current Congress to pass the bill. The panelists will engage residual issues, such as the constitutionality of the proposed bill vis a vis equal protection clause, the issue of ‘double compensation,’ and resourcing of the compensation. Members of the MRCW will also share the real state of rehabilitation from the eyes of those who live on the ground in Marawi, and the looming problems and conflict implications of the unfinished business of rehabilitation, when the Duterte government ends in June 2022.
