POLLS and PERILS: Fault lines and flood lines are rising as new perils overtake the polls
22 May 2025 Bulletins / CEMS
The recent midterm elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region brought a disturbing wave of violence, intimidation, and militarization, particularly in conflict-prone areas like the Maguindanao provinces and Lanao del Sur. Communities bravely turned out to vote, yet the fragile peace that followed has already been shaken yet again, this time by climate-related disaster.
Recent tropical storms caused severe flooding across Maguindanao del Sur and nearby provinces, exacerbating election-related tensions. As of May 20, 2025, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reports that over 192,000 individuals (38,689 families) have been affected. Many are now displaced, sheltering in evacuation centers or other temporary locations.
CCAA is sounding the alarm on an escalating humanitarian crisis in these areas. The convergence of political conflicts and its disaster-related impact demands urgent and coordinated action from local governments, the BARMM and the national government to prevent a dangerous tipping point that would further destabilize an already volatile region.
